Kamasan
Kamasan is a traditional painters community village, they called their style kamasan style. Most of their painting is about Mahabarata, Ramayana, and other epics like Arjuna Wiwaha or Sutasoma. Their painting style is one of best style in Bali. Kamasan also known as the village of the carver like the painter they also name their style as a Kamasan Style. Painting and Sculpture from Kamasan is an amazing art, Many international art collectors say that Kamasan style very smooth and fabulous, and the massage that carried by the painter describe very good, many tourist local and international was impress by this style.
The painters were also farmers. In the morning, they worked the fields. Ten in the afternoon when the sun was too hot they took their painting tools and started to express their themselves. Often they worked in a group to produce a painting.
All material that is used in this process is totally from nature. The colors used were white from bones, black from soot, red from Chinese cinnabar, yellow from ochre clay, blue from indigo and brown from red oxide clay. And they painted on only the finest cotton that they starched with rice flour. They used bamboo brushes and pens to produce their magnificent art works.
Kamasan is a village located at Klungkung regency center of painting and sculture burgeon, it's about 43 km from Denpasar. If you want to go to Kamasan there is two (2) alternative you can choose to reach Kamasan
1. West Route : From central town of Klungkung to the south, about 1.5 km then turn left to banjar Sangging, this is hometown of the famous painter called Nyoman Mandra. Then go south untuk you reach banjar Pande Mas, center of gold and silver carving.
2. South Route : From central town of Klungkung to the South, about 3 km through some village and banjar, like Tojan and Gelgel until you reach banjar Pande, center of traditional bullet carving. In the road to Kamasan at Tojan and Gelgel you can hear some of carver hammer voice.
The facility at Kamasan Village is pretty complete, there is a Showroom for painting, carving or sculpture, located at west of banjar Sangging about 50 meters. There is also an art studio for painting training the founder is Nyoman Mandra, the famous Kamasan painter. If you go to Kamasan then you can look the painters or the carvers working at their home and sometimes you can buy their artwork with cheap price.
